Abstract: This research utilized a qualitative thematic analysis to investigate the literacy practices of elementary students who created video game reviews. 33 children at a multi-age school participated in this project during a three-week educational unit on video games. During the unit, children played, analyzed, and reviewed video games. Data analysis reveals that children engaged in literacy practices while playing games as well as creating their video game reviews. Given that existing research indicates interest from both preservice and in-service literacy educators in incorporating video games into their instruction yet have limited experience actually facilitating video game-based activities, this study provides a practical example of ways that teachers can integrate video games into their English language arts teaching through facilitating game reviews that incorporate a variety of valuable literacy practices.
