Abstract: Many K-12 and higher education online course developers wrestle with a traditional challenge – fostering student engagement. One approach to building engagement is to incorporate game, play and/or puzzle elements. While the topic of “gamification” has received significant researcher and practitioner attention, this presentation adopts the less-examined “game-based learning” framework that emphasizes story-telling and immersive environments, without necessarily employing elements such as leader boards and points systems. This presentation will demonstrate best practices and lessons learned from two instructional designers who created a series of virtual escape rooms for an online undergraduate psychology course. This session will use live examples of educational escape rooms and walk participants through several technologies used for creating them including ThinkLink, Google Voice, embedded audio and videos, and creating digital locks with Google Forms. The presenters will share reflections and insights on creating content for online game-based learning, and integrating this approach into course designs. The session will then open to a forum to discuss how game elements can stimulate students’ cooperative problem-solving and application of content knowledge in a creative, engaging way. Participants in this session will leave with knowledge of specific technologies and resources for game-based learning and with advice for how to make the most of these tools.

No presider for this session.
