Abstract: Teacher education programs (TEPs) increasingly use mixed reality simulations (MRS) as platforms for teacher candidates to practice tasks in low-stakes conditions. This study explores the use of MRS at three TEPs to understand how candidates experience authenticity in MRS and what might lead to variation in experiences among novices. Our findings fill a research gap about the implementation of MRS that supports candidate learning. In this embedded multiple case study, we find that novices’ experiences varied according to their familiarity with the MRS platform, as well as the sequencing of practice with other learning experiences. We suggest that these features ...
