Abstract: A confluence of factors surrounding COVID-19 – e.g., blurred personal/professional boundaries, increased demands on teachers’ knowledge and changing technology trends – has highlighted an opportunity for teacher education to better prepare teachers for multidimensional approaches to professional development. A key goal for teacher education to achieve in the next five years is to intensify evidence-based efforts to facilitate teachers’ cultivation of unstructured, just-in-time professional learning networks spanning social media and other contexts. This article outlines the context and evidence-based rationale for this vision and the threats to achieving it. The article concludes with advice for teacher educators seeking to lead such efforts and recommendations for ‘next wave’ scholarship on teachers’ professional learning networks.
