Abstract: This paper describes how the growth expectations of pre-service teachers changed after teaching through a virtual STEM-focused elementary summer camp, which was designed in part to provide a context for pre-service teachers to gain teaching experience and expertise. Through project-based learning, elementary students in grades 3-6 worked with pre-service teacher mentors to complete hands-on projects in various STEM and computer science areas, including coding, 3D printing, and digital storytelling. Though offered face-to-face prior years, the camp was moved to synchronous online format during Summer 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions. The results include how the “effective communication,” “problem-solving,” “cultural competency,” “teamwork,” “social responsibility,” and “ethical decision making” learning expectations of pre-service students changed after the virtual program.
