Were We In The Same Course? A Multi-Site Descriptive Study Investigating Faculty and Student Online Experiences and Perceptions Amidst the First Wave of the COVID-19 Pandemic
Abstract: This focus of this presentation is a discussion of the findings from this multi-site descriptive study that investigated the perceptions of students (N=195) and faculty (N= 38) learning and teaching online during the first wave of the global pandemic. Quantitative data is presented to describe the study sample and to investigate perceptual differences between faculty and students related to the effectiveness, engagement, and comfort in the online environment. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data revealed three themes and 10 sub-themes: Learning and Teaching (Environment, Evaluation), Relationships (Social Isolation, Virtual Relations, Communications), and Mental Health (Academic Shock, The Waiting Game, Technology, Resiliency, Work life balance). The data provide a rich understanding of learning and teaching experienced online during a global pandemic that is vital to inform future program planning.
