Abstract: Asynchronous online discussion is a vital element of online teaching and learning to support collaborative learning as well as to establish social and teaching presence. To examine student engagement in asynchronous online discussion, many focus solely on student’ speaking behaviors (e.g., the quantity of making posts in the forum). However, productive participation in online discussion requires more than making posts. The quality of how students interact with posting of others is of importance to their learning. It is thus important for instructors to take student listening behaviors (i.e., engagement with the posts contributed by others) into consideration when examining student learning in asynchronous online discussion. The purpose of this study is to examine how students with different online listening behaviors identified feel their learning satisfaction in asynchronous online discussion differently. The result indicates that when students have more interactions with other postings, they have a greater satisfaction in online discussion than those who have not. Future directions for research are discussed, including the design and development of an evaluation matrix for students’ listening behaviors in asynchronous online discussion.
