Abstract: Much instruction in middle schools, high schools, and colleges limits opportunities for creativity with digital tools. Though fostering creativity does not require digital tools, use of application software and authoring tools is appropriate at times to help student acquire a wide variety of learning goals. Also, fostering creativity with digital tools serves students well in this information era because leadership potential rises with increasing capability to use digital devices effectively and efficiently, and with escalating capability to use digital tools to innovate. To address the problem of limited instructional opportunities for innovation, this session presents multiple options for using the free 3D modeling and simulation tool, Blender, to foster creativity during lessons in social studies, mathematics, and science courses. To demonstrate creative development in Blender, a model tractor, a tetrahedron, and a simulation of Earth’s orbit around the Sun will be created in this session. To prompt additional reflection on how to challenge students to make creative use of Blender and other digital tools, the presenter will discuss lessons learned teaching Blender to K-12 teachers and to instructional design and development students.
