Abstract: This case study explores digital citizenship through the words of students from one high school, who are participating in a year-long research/learning project using social media in civic ways. Responding to calls by scholars of civic education to expand notions of civic engagement and digital citizenship, this study moves beyond old ideas of digital citizenship that focused on teaching students to protect their digital footprints. Rather, this project expands the notion of digital citizenship to include ideas about participating in civic conversations on social media, and monitoring those conversations for misinformation.
