Abstract: A study was conducted of pre-service educators to investigate their ability to determine the emotions children and adults were expressing under their face coverings. In this study, data from a subset of a larger study identifying the emotions of children and indicated that Elementary pre-service teachers N=100 have more difficulty identifying students with a sad affect than those with a happy affect. Implications of this study for teacher educators includes having pre-service educators practice “reading” the affective expressions of those wearing face coverings and to have pre-service educators practice their own expressions while wearing a face covering
