Abstract: Self-directed learning is a personalized learning strategy that allows learners to control and manage their own learning process. Several studies have been conducted to develop self-directed learning in different learning contexts. However, few studies attempt to explore how different self-abilities influence self-directed learning in technology-based learning environments. This paper conducted a literature review about the development of self-directed learning in the technology-based learning environment. Based on Garrison’s three-dimensions model (1997), we examined the influence of learners’ self-management, self-monitoring, and motivation in the self-directed learning process under the technology-based learning environments.
