Abstract: Universities are finding that they need to develop competitive online programs. This paper addresses the establishment of a successful online program in English and modern languages that has doubled enrollment and offers the equivalent of a practical manual on how to develop such a program that meets the needs of students while benefiting the overall growth of the discipline. The paper traces the impetus for the program, its development, its benefits, ongoing concerns and obstacles, methods of advising exclusively for online students, and will offer advice on how to get students engaged with each other while studying in such a format. The same direction discussed in this paper can be applied to any discipline.
