Abstract: This paper presents initial findings from one cohort of undergraduate students who used social media as part of a semester-long intercultural learning project. While the larger project has a broad scope of exploring the different ways in which students’ use of social media could potentially support their intercultural development, this particular cohort was examined for the purpose of identifying their social media usage patterns and uncovering relationships between these usage patterns and their intercultural development. This investigation was conducted because of the existing research that links social media usage with anxiety and other socioemotional concerns, as well as with the potential of social media to influence user behavior. The present study sought to determine if students’ general habits of social media usage and social media peer feedback would be correlated with their intercultural development. The full findings will be reported at the conference.
