A Robot-Assisted Learning Application for Nonverbal Cultural Communication and Second Language Practice
Abstract: This paper provides an overview of a proof of concept project to utilize interactive humanoid robots as social partners and peer tutors in study abroad preparation for students traveling to Japan. The overseas program includes a course that studies cultural legends and folklore in the design of digital storytelling, new media, and video games, and is part of the general education program open to all students at a public undergraduate institution in the state of North Carolina. No prior Japanese language knowledge is required to enroll in the study abroad program, so the robot assisted learning application provides several benefits, such as opportunities for students to practice polite and appropriate ways of speaking the language. It also addresses issues such as the need to deliver a flexible system in cases where a tutor of a particular language is not available, and also provides a comfortable practice experience for students who suffer from foreign language classroom anxiety.
