Abstract: The integration of online discussion forums into coursework has been found to promote student collaboration, higher order thinking skills and engage learners in meaningful learning. In particular, discussion forums have been proven to be effective learning platforms to facilitate knowledge construction and creation. Taking a research-informed approach towards understanding the dynamics and drivers of knowledge construction, this study examines the dyadic interactions in initial phases of discussions involving technology teacher candidates. The sequence of discussion content creation and the patterns of interactions that took place between learners in an online discussion forum were analyzed to assess the quality of knowledge creation and the formation of social networks in an online discussion forum for an introductory course in technology teacher education at a large public senior college. In this context, learners engage in shared creation of knowledge and advancement of digital artifacts such as images and videos. Descriptive statistics show that state of knowledge advancement varies across discussion topics and when combined with social network analysis, six main dyadic patterns were illuminated in the initial phases of online discussions. This research provides insights into how dyadic interaction patterns can be utilized to understand the degree of collaboration and to assess the intensity of knowledge sharing in online learning environments.
