When Learning Tools Need to Handle More than Right and Wrong – Addressing the Challenges of Creating a Serious Game in the Field of Nursing Education
Abstract: In the project GaBaLearn, case simulations that are based on media-didactial theories as well as theories for nursing didactics see a practical implementation as a serious game. The aims are to provide an opportunity for the learners to train relevant skills in digital learning environments as well as the increase in technical skills and the development of a critical mindset in using technology assistance. We tested a prototype of the resulting game ( ‘Take Care’) on learners, scoring the results on the SUS Scale and the readiness for technology on the basis of the instrument for technological commitment. Users averaged 43 points on the technological commitment scale and 67 points on the SUS Scale. Overall nurses show a rather low level of technological commitment and have little experience with digital learning technologies. This paper also discusses the improvements that have been made after the first prototype test.
