Abstract: The University of Alberta’s Centre for Teaching and Learning offers a yearly New Professor Orientation that aims to inform about teaching and the supports available for those with teaching responsibilities. This orientation is vital because although the first teaching experiences often shape new faculty attitudes and effectiveness as instructors, many embark with little or no guidance. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the teaching, technology and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning needs to inform the redevelopment of the New Professor Teaching Orientation. The study used an exploratory convergent mixed methods design. Participants (n = 53) responded a modified version of the Faculty Development Needs Assessment tool and participated in semi-structured interviews. Findings showed that new faculty have different needs as they advance through their teaching careers.
