Classroom Simulation Experiences to Prepare Teachers to Use a Research-Based Comprehension Approach
Abstract: Despite growing adoption of simulation tools in teacher preparation programs, few high-quality studies examine simulation to train pre-service teachers to use research-supported practices. The roundtable presentation will share a completed experimental pilot study and in-progress follow-up study, which examine uses of simulation to improve pre-service teachers’ (N~77) practical knowledge and practice of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR). Preliminary results from the pilot study indicate that experience in a TeachLivE simulation can improve practical knowledge of CSR. Audience members will engage in discussion about (a) implications and factors contributing to results, (b) challenges and suggestions to carefully design targeted simulation experiences, and (c) creation of P-TV to reflect Mayer’s theoretical principles (2008; 2009).
