Abstract: Today's universities operate in extended ecosystems that are no longer constrained to the on-campus physical space. Students and faculty are becoming more diverse and scholarship is relying more on access to knowledge worldwide. Constructivists describe learning as a social, interactive process with students constructing knowledge by verbalizing ideas to one another, contributing to the process, and reacting to others. Yong Zhao (2009) identifies four challenges for educators: 1) understand and harness entrepreneurial spirit; 2) foster student autonomy and leadership; 3) champion inventive learners; and 4) develop global partnerships and resources. This investigation addresses Zhao’s fourth challenge for developing global partnerships and resources. It seeks to understand the factors that contribute to successful online collaborations between international educational institutions. Specifically, this study leads readers to establish effective international collaborations in a practical way supported by both qualitative and quantitative evidence as well as a model for international collaborations. Using a grounded theory approach, the authors scrutinize the aspects that lead to successful online collaboration, followed by multiple regression quantitative analyses to examine the factors that lead to virtual team building, and then conclude by presenting a model for online international collaboration for educators.
