Abstract: This paper describes an innovative model of capacity building that evolved to support teachers as they engaged with the New Pedagogies for Deep Learning initiative (2013 to date) Victoria’s Department of Education and Training (DET) initially used the NPDL vision, framework and tools to set the directional vision for developing pedagogical understanding and practices about deep learning Then they “let go” by providing diverse professional learning opportunities (must-dos and can-dos) for schools to make sense of and gather evidence of what deep learning could look like Finally using evidence from practice the DET are “reigning in” the ideas and lessons learned from the work to support system change The emphasis on developing strong supports and investing in developing teacher capacity will help to ensure the sustainability of NPDL’s central focus of developing new pedagogies for deep learning while also laying the foundations of that can help scale up the initiative
