Abstract: With mass media and the fast-growing Internet as such dominant forces, learning has come to depend heavily upon visual imagery. Within a graduate level course on new literacies, the concept of Internet memes was introduced. Internet memes are those photographs that become attached to a particular personality. These often circulate in a viral way with relation to current events. Through examination and creation of “teacher memes” that illustrated characteristics widely associated with the teaching profession, exploration of the positive and negative stereotypes regarding teachers, and how these have been constructed and dispersed through media portrayals and other vehicles was the basis for this study. When participants were asked to reflect on how the memes and discussion helped foster collegiality and professional norms, students responded positively to using these alternate texts in teacher education as a valuable community experience.
