Abstract: As more students enter programs with fully or partially online courses, the field of education has invested considerable thought and research into the most effective models of instruction in online learning environments. Student collaboration is a prominent feature of most designs, but effective communication and organization skills are not a given with students new to the tools and technologies involved with effective online collaboration. Rather than relying on a pure discovery-based approach to teaching new online students how to collaborate, this article proposes a framework for creating multimedia interactions using the Cognitive Apprenticeship model of instructional design to explicitly model and coach expert-level competencies and problem solving skills.
