Abstract: Play is a crucial element in young children’s development. Research indicates that play promotes the development of foundational blocks that support social-emotional, language, and cognitive development. Some studies documented concerns regarding technology use impeding children’s play. Due to limited literature around the impact of technology on play, early childhood teachers and care givers are skeptical of the developmental gains that may accrue as a result of integrating technology into children’s play. This paper reviews the definition of play in the context of technology, and offers research-based types of technology tools that support play that enhances social-emotional, language, and cognitive development. In addition the presentation extends strategies to integrate technology into young children’s play.
