Abstract: This paper presents results from a Prekindergarten Mathematics Study that used digital media to support early math learning. Children in the study improved significantly in their understanding of targeted early mathematics skills—counting, number recognition and subitizing, shapes, and patterns—compared to children in the Business as Usual condition. The presentation will provide insights into how the curriculum materials were developed and implemented, with a focus on describing the intertwining of digital media with hands-on activities to support early learning. The study used a randomized control trial design and was implemented in 92 prekindergarten classrooms in the New York City and San Francisco Bay areas. The presentation will describe the study structure, intervention, comparison and control conditions, and will provide details about the kinds of digital media used to support early learning as well as the curriculum supplement framework that supported their use.
