Abstract: This workshop session offers an experiential and exploratory look at the role of mobile technologies in teacher education; outlines creative strategies and possibilities for integrating mobile technologies into K16 curriculum with limited resources; and demonstrate examples such as StarTalk grant using Ipad touches to teach Hindi and Indian Culture and Global Kitchen Project to develop healthy eating habits; and showcases participants’ projects and digital stories as a virtual gallery walk. We present wide range of meanings participants associated with experiential project based learning activities; the impact of mobile technologies in developing multicultural and multilingual curriculum that promotes differentiated learning; the ways in which participants integrated math, maps and media into their learning; and how they gained alternative points of view on global issues and renewed interest and commitment to world languages and global education.

Objectives

Objectives: • Identify the role of mobile technologies within the context of global education • Explore the key concepts, core questions and national standards) ISTE/NET standards, common core, and P21) as related to project based learning. • Using Web 2.0 tools to make global connections such as Skype; Voicethread; Glogster • Argue the challenges and advantages of mobile technologies in the multicultural curriculum, • Develop skills in deconstructing existing curricula and communicating media messages, • Discuss lesson ideas, assessment tools, and curriculum guides that incorporate 21st Century Skills and new media and technologies across grades and subjects, • Integrate the use of mobile technologies in an instructional context by exploring new technologies to furthering classroom knowledge. * Explore Universal Design for Learning models.

Topical Outline

After the formal introduction and group activities, all participants will explore a Gallery Walk. Gallery Walk is based on Museum approach to teaching. Gallery Walk for this project is a collection of artifacts (i.e. maps, pictures, posters, audio and video clips) designed to showcase the importance and exemplary usage of multilingual learning modules, digital stories across content areas. The workshop will provide learning centers for each individual to interact and complete the tasks while interacting in group discussions and writing responses. There are different projects for each participant to view, explore and react. The participants will write their reactions next to each activity and discuss the significance and possibilities for incorporating these new technologies across curriculum areas. Three Hours: Hour 1: Introduction and Background Information on Global Education Introduction of the presenters Project Based Learning Exercises Hour 2: Experiential Stations: At each station participants will have the opportunity to explore a way to connect their classroom to the world. They will rotate and also suggested to complete at least 4 activities out of 6 stations. Station 1: Assistive Technology and Universal Design Lesson Plans Station 2: Web 2.0 station: (e.g. Classroom 2.0, Voicethread, Skype, Glogster) Station 3: Curriculum Connections Station 4: Multimedia Presentation Tools (e.g. Hyperstudio, Prezi) Station 5: Yoo-Star II is primarily an entertainment based application but we have shown how it can be repurposed for language learning--the question is how to become proficient at re-calibrating online and mobile app to facilitate project based learning. Station 6: Global Networking (e.g. ePals, LiveMocha, Iearn) Hour 3: Participant–to–Participant Sharing the learning gained and communicating their understanding on how to connect their classroom to the world.
