Out of the WILD and into the Schools: iPads from a Domestication Perspective
Abstract: In this paper, we present and discuss preliminary findings from an on-going study on the use of iPads in a primary school in Oslo, Norway. We adopt a domestication perspective in order to analyse the integration of iPads as a pedagogical tool in the classroom. In the paper, we raise the issue of how a new type of mobile technology such as the iPad is appropriated into schools and classrooms, and how t is adjusted for the classroom. Our findings indicate that iPads easily adjust to fit within the school and the classroom culture. However, the success of integration depends to a certain extent on contextual conditions such as practical and organisational factors that increase facilitation and stimulates pedagogical use of the technology. Teachers’ use of iPads can be characterised as flexible and mobile but limited rather than innovative and creative.
