Evaluating digital tools for the teaching of basic literacy and numeracy skills

Abstract: The teaching of basic literacy and numeracy is an essential part of the curriculum of primary schools. Consequently, it has become an important in the teacher-training program and has been given a significant place in the curriculum. This paper reports on the experiences from a part of the teacher-training program where students are asked to evaluate digital tools that aim to support the teaching of basic literacy and numeracy skills. A diversity of digital tools suitable for the teaching of basic literacy and numeracy are presented for students in terms of "station teaching." Based on a system of concepts from basic literacy and numeracy teaching and an evaluation framework, the students were asked to assess the digital tools to which they are exposed. The teacher-training students reported that both the system of concepts and the evaluation framework were helpful in the process of evaluating what tools are suitable for what purposes, such as primary school levels, basic skills, and
