A Balanced Approach to Assessments for Online Courses

Abstract: Online courses have continued to expand in the arena of higher education. In the literature about online teaching, one area that has received much attention is assessment in the online environment. What are some of the challenges that exist in assessment of student learning in online courses? What are the opportunities made possible in assessment with the online environment? What can we do in terms of assessment to ensure that student learning has taken place as we would have expected? This paper provides a discussion of these topics and showcases how assessments are approached in one online course that the author is currently teaching.
