Social awareness allows learners to become easily acquainted with their classmates, more engaged and, thus, experience more successful learning. In online learning environments, where the personal contacts and informal exchanges are limited, social awareness information is often mediated by cyber artifacts such as graphical icons and descriptors. In most of the current online learning environments, however, the information is precompiled and displayed in an indiscriminative manner. This research studies aspects of the learner’s information, which is needed for social awareness artifacts in online education, and of their degrees of sensitivity to be disclosed to diverse audiences and audience groups. The level of abstraction and aggregation of social information that should be delivered through the mediated awareness tool is also studied. Overall, the study intends to provide the much needed characteristics of social awareness information for an online instructional environment.
