Bridging the Gap Between Conceptual Knowledge and Professional Practice: A Discussion on Helping Students Build Relational Ways of Knowing and Being to Navigate New Practice Environments

In this session we invite discussion on the ways we help our students to bridge the gap between classroom learning and professional practice. Researchers argue that the gap resides not in the “knowledge to understand” vs. “knowledge to do” dichotomy, but rather in the disconnect between classroom contexts for learning and the actual situations in which conceptual knowledge is applied. At issue is that knowledge is co-constructed between knower and the known as an embodied and relational engagement, one in which the purpose of the engagement defines how we construct knowledge. Competency is not a particular set of skills but rather an identity or a way of knowing. Agency, application and purpose—action with intent, not abstract conceptualization—form the basis of professional identity as a reflection of competency. How are we helping students develop relational ways of knowing and being so that they can navigate practice environments? To open discussion, the facilitator will highlight a “self-in-relation-to” holistic approach to learning, and point to specific assignments and student work that illustrate this approach. His purpose is to help students understand and reflect on the self-in-action, the ways they make meaning of new contexts or environments.
