Abstract: The paradigm shift from the dissemination of knowledge to the construction of knowledge is well established. In online classes, the discussion board is one of the most common spaces in which this collaborative knowledge construction is demonstrated. Opportunities for remote or online learning were increasing even before the global pandemic required an emergency shift to online learning. As this growth continues, one challenge for teachers, paraprofessionals, curriculum developers, and instructional designers is the design of initial discussion prompts. This session will explore historical and contemporary frameworks for classifying questions and appreciating the influence of discussion design on learning outcomes. This exploration culminates in a series of recommendations for designing initial discussion prompts and provides the knowledge foundation necessary to understand the recommended design guidelines. Well-designed question prompts may influence the quality of class discussion, and the quality of the class discussion can influence the learning outcomes.
