Abstract: This session reports on the account of the design, development, and emerging outcomes for an instructional tool developed to support students learning English syntax. The design of the tool is grounded in a cognitive strategy where learners color code the parts of speech. The tool allows users to use toolbar buttons to manually color code the parts of speech, and as each part of speech is labeled by the user, it tallies the parts of speech. To make the tool widely available to K-12 teachers and students, it was developed as a free Google Docs add-on. Emerging outcomes suggest that the shift to online teaching and learning for K-12 teachers and students during the COVID-19 pandemic have resulted in more than expected users of the first version of the tool. Directions for future research with teachers and students are discussed.
