Abstract: With the rapid transition to online and remote learning due to the coronavirus pandemic, many institutions have implemented new technologies and additional resources to ensure faculty and students are equipped for successful teaching and learning in this new, extended normal in which we find ourselves. While much effort has been focused toward online pedagogical practices for teachers, including training for new educational technologies, students also should be afforded access to resources to enhance online learning skills. The purpose of this session is to share our experience and engage participants in discussion of the development of a one-day virtual student orientation aimed towards equipping students new to online learning with the fundamental principles for online learning success. Using the Community of Inquiry theoretical framework’s foundational tenets of social, cognitive, and teaching presence, the development and implementation of the Virtual Student Success Fest, a three-hour virtual session accompanied by supplemental online course resources provided first-time students with more in-depth resources and tools, which will be shared to engage further dialog among professionals and educators with shared experiences.
