Increasing the Effectiveness of Faculty Professional Development with Open Educational Resources and Instructional Video

Abstract: Increasing faculty engagement in professional development can be thwarted by several factors. By treating faculty like non-traditional students and offering a variety of flexible options to access the training, including instructional video and content that was developed to be an open educational resource, we increased the effectiveness of the training program. This strategy was adopted to train faculty to use a learning management system that allowed retention software to assist student success coaches. The success of the training was measured both by the decrease in faculty requests for help and positive effects directly related to their learning and implementing certain aspects of the training. We discovered that creating an OER that was easy to access and with high-quality instructional video would increase faculty engagement. This proved to better prepare the college for the rapid transition to virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic
