Abstract: Twenty three teachers from five elementary and two secondary schools on the Big Island of Hawaii participated in a development (PD) project to provide students engaging lessons to do with their teacher during distance learning. Teachers met in grade level cohorts via Zoom with the curriculum developer toselect lessons aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The curriculum developer ordered materials, developed the student copies and collated the resulting Envelopes of Science Awesomeness for each student of the participating teachers. A total of 990 students in seven different grade levels (grades 3-9) received at least three different Envelopes of Science Awesomeness containing NGSS lessons and experiment materials during the school year. The participating teachers completed a self-reported google form addressing their interactions with the lessons and materials provided. Questions addressing changes in self efficacy related to teaching NGSS lessons hands-on virtually were included. Findings revealed that teachers were very excited to plan and receive their Envelopes of Science Awesomeness. One teacher commented, “Our kids love their envelopes… they know they will be doing something engaging”. Another teacher said “this has been so wonderful because I can just teach the lesson and not worry about the prep of the materials for my students”. Both comments speak to the extreme stress that teachers went through during the COVID-19 pandemic.
