Abstract: To enable an in-person reopening with social distancing, Xavier University of Louisiana required all full-time faculty to teach at least one remote course in fall 2020. A plan was developed to educate over 200 faculty in remote instruction with limited staff and resources in the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Faculty Development. In response, #LearnEverywhereXULA (#LEX) was designed to support faculty once they demonstrated competence in the mechanics of Brightspace, Xavier’s learning management system. The self-paced #LEX course was designed to demonstrate and model pedagogical practices and standards that facilitate effective remote instruction. Eight modules were developed based on the Quality Matters General Standards; however, each module was tailored to emphasize the tools available in Brightspace and the "Xavier Touch" – faculty's mission-driven commitment to support every student. Each module followed the same structure: a statement of learning objectives; instruction through video, weblinks and text; illustrations of how to address the topic in Brightspace; an assignment to build an aligned component in Brightspace; and a reflective activity. Faculty were awarded a digital badge upon completion of each module and a course completion badge after earning all eight module-level badges. Faculty then submitted a fall 2020 course slated for remote instruction for review to determine if principles and practices demonstrated in #LEX were evident in their course.
