Innovating the Large Class Experience: Teaming Up! to enhance learning.
Abstract: Pedagogical research has shown that active learning in the classroom promotes attendance, student engagement, and higher achievement when compared to traditional lecturing (Deslauriers et al, 2011). As well, use of frequent testing is known to enhance student learning and retention of key concepts (Weiman, 2017). However, providing such opportunities in large classes is very challenging. We developed a web-based tool called Team Up! which provides the means for active learning, testing with immediate feedback, and peer learning through team work in large classes. Students prepare in advance by watching videos and reading, and then work in small groups in class to answer questions with Team Up!. The tool is integrated with the learning management system so that student grades are automatically recorded. Our preliminary evaluations suggest that students prefer this type of in-class activity compared to traditional lecturing. We are also assessing whether student learning is enhanced with this technique.
