Share Paper: Game Play: Fostering Empathy through Game-Based Learning

Abstract: This paper explores the literature on the use of digital games as a tool for developing empathy. We briefly explore the literature on how social interaction impacts our learning both from an interpersonal viewpoint and a pedagogical one by drawing on the literature from Piaget and Vygotsky. In addition, we briefly explore game design and how games offer the possibility to experience multiple perspectives, naturally allowing for students to view the ‘game’ through a variety of lenses and provide an opportunity for experiencing empathy.
