Beyond Social Presence: Increasing Cognitive Presence through Meaningful Interaction
Abstract: The Community of Inquiry model (Garrison, Anderson, & Archer, 2000) is a comprehensive process model that illustrates how social, teaching, and cognitive presence interact with each other, with the emphasis on the notion of interaction. Meaningful interaction is an important component of online course design. It contributes to increasing cognitive presence. In light of these notions, the authors share their experience in designing and implementing fully online and hybrid teacher training courses in a higher education setting in the United States. The authors have used instructional technologies such as Captivate, Camtasia, and Web 2.0 tools to create learning objects and learner-content interfaces in order to enhance the learning experience that helped learners to co-construct knowledge through meaningful interaction.
