Abstract: A heterogeneous group of learners presents challenges for trainers. Nothing is more frustrating than attending a training in which the trainer "aims for the middle," and as a result, fails to meet the needs of the majority of the attendees. Novices get confused, and experts become frustrated. Five instructional design models stress the importance of learner analysis: ADDIE, Dick & Carey, Gerlach & Ely, ASSURE, and the Kemp Design Model.
