Abstract: The presentation will address the need for students to view their accomplishments from the perspective of the workplace and to develop a professional identity. I will describe how I use a portfolio assignment as both a developmental and an employment tool in a senior-level technical communication course. I will emphasize the role of reviews by professional communicators and show sample student portfolios. The process of creating a portfolio challenges students to examine their accomplishments, to acknowledge their strengths and weaknesses, to think critically about their education, and to strive to present their skills, abilities, and achievements in the best possible light. Receiving reviews of their portfolios from professional technical communicators helps students contextualize their work and view it from the perspective of the workplace. The reviews are instrumental in facilitating their transition from student to professional.
