Learning Management System Engagement Hours: An Assessment Method for Evaluating and Advancing Learning Outcomes
Abstract: Educational institutions have expanded LMS infrastructures to support enhanced learning and delivery, in order to address challenges and complexities of student enrollment and varied courses, improve access to learning content, increase efficiency in learning activities, and track and report student learning and performance. While over 90% of faculty and students are satisfied with an LMS to improve teaching and learning, only about half of students reported using an LMS in all their courses. Along with variances in LMS usage across courses, reports also indicate student self-reported studying hours have been decreasing over time. This study addresses and examines the relationship between LMS engagement hours and student learning outcomes. Results established a significant relationship between LMS engagement hours and learning outcomes, demonstrating LMS engagement as an assessment measure and mechanism for improving student learning outcomes.
