Share Paper: Spontaneous Interactions and Distributed Teacher Presence by Teacher Candidates in a Social Learning Environment

Abstract: Learning is both personal and social at the same time. In order to investigate the impact on learning and social behaviors of graduate level educational technology students, a social network, Pace Commons, was developed using Elgg software. In the Spring of 2019, two courses were conducted using Pace Commons. One was Computer Science for Teachers, a fully online course for graduate education students. The other was Adolescent Teaching Methods, a face to face undergraduate course. Student interactions were categorized and analyzed to determine trends of spontaneous interactions between students.
