Abstract: Learning is both personal and social at the same time. In order to investigate the impact on learning and social behaviors of graduate level educational technology students, a social network, Pace Commons, was developed using Elgg software. In the Spring of 2019, two courses were conducted using Pace Commons. One was Computer Science for Teachers, a fully online course for graduate education students. The other was Adolescent Teaching Methods, a face to face undergraduate course. Student interactions were categorized and analyzed to determine trends of spontaneous interactions between students. The graduate students in the CS for Teachers course showed significantly more spontaneous interactions than did their undergraduate counterparts. Further analysis demonstrated a positive relationship between these spontaneous interactions and both distributed teacher presence and learning activities perceived as authentic by the students. Implications of this research are discussed.
