Abstract: The latest shift towards increasing number of online courses by many universities is increasingly emphasizing on the role of the instructional designers in course design and development. Often, the faculty members in higher education feel challenged while redesigning their traditional face-to-face, lecture-based course to an online course. This paper aims to document and describe the process of designing a course in a large Midwestern University in the United States. The study was guided by the Narrative inquiry method to describe the process. Based on the initial student feedback, this study recommends that Self-Determination theory should be should be used to create a student-centered online learning environment.
