Abstract: This paper will discuss the importance of instructor presence in fully online courses, a major component addressed in the “PICCA” Model for success in online courses. When designing an online course, the instructor must be aware and mindful that the ongoing availability, interaction, consistency, and feedback provided by online course instructors is critical to establishing positive faculty-student rapport and to sustaining healthy professional relationships. Therefore, instructors must build in specific opportunities for meaningful instructor presence in the online course, so as to be infused throughout delivery of the curriculum in rich and in-depth communication methods. Students’ perceptions on the instructor’s involvement in the course may greatly impact their performance and satisfaction in the online classroom. The instructor plays a vital role in fostering the development of positive culture and climate in the online course through modeling positive interactive behaviors, encouraging student engagement and sharing of ideas and research, and providing a continual source of structure, support, and guidance. The “PICCA” approach will also be reviewed, along with its specific guidelines for faculty and student success in online courses. Student and faculty reflections on a “PICCA” Model online classroom will be shared, with specific references to the impact of designing a course that conveys instructor presence, availability, committed involvement, and approachability.
