Abstract: Despite immense technological advances and emerging technologies available to us, pedagogies in many online classrooms continue to apply a content-driven, instructivist mode of delivery that do not support the development of 21st Century skills. Current online course design standards that aim to measure quality in online classrooms also do little to nothing to support the development of 21st Century skills or the pedagogies that support them. As a result, many online classrooms offer little else than leveraging technology to automate the delivery of content and assessments rather than creating the innovative learning experiences that support the development of 21st Century skills. The challenge now is to expand the design standards for online learning environments in ways that guide instructors and instructional designers to design curriculum, tailor the learning environment, and define the role of the instructor in support of 21st Century skills.
