Abstract: Research shows that learning becomes more meaningful for basic writers when text is combined with other senses like visual, oral, and aural. As students interact more with technology on a daily basis (smartphones, social media, etc.) new literacies emerge, which have tremendous implications for the way we teach writing in the classroom. Digital storytelling is art of telling a compelling personal story through the use of digital tools such as images, recorded narrative, music, video. The process of digital storytelling allows basic writers to take a personal narrative and translate it into “a multidimensional experience.” This article discusses various studies in order to demonstrate the benefits of a multimodal approach in the writing classroom. It also shows instructors how to create digital stories with basic writers.
