Mathematical online discussions: potent or pointless?

Abstract: Online discussions have been a focal point of research in the field of online learning, but a majority of these studies do not look at the teaching of online mathematics and related areas. This research study attempts to provide a lens into online discussions in mathematics by examining threaded discussions in a semester long undergraduate course. It presents a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the ways and extent in which intellectual quality is represented in these online discussions based on indicators from the productive pedagogies framework.
