Flip the Professional Development: A Case in Higher Education
Abstract: As a major format of professional development, lecture-based traditional workshop has been criticized for its ineffectiveness. Research shows that flipped classroom can enhance student learning. Based on a similar idea, flipped workshop was designed in order to improve the effectiveness of faculty professional development in a U.S. university. The design of the flipped workshops in this presentation focused on extending the duration of professional development and making connections between workshop contents and faculty’s teaching practices—two factors suggested by research that can impact the effectiveness of professional development. Best practices for online teaching were utilized to design the pre-workshop activities. The rationale as well as structures and activities of the flipped workshops will be shared in this presentation. IN addition, post-workshop survey data collected from faculty regarding their perceptions on the flipped workshops will be discussed.
